FOUND - the TwentyThird Psalm

“Found” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

“Found” is a children’s Christian picture book written and illustrated by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Jago. It is a board book, so it would be appropriate for little hands.

This book is the twenty-third Psalm written for a little one to understand.  The writing and the pictures are precious! There are only a few words to each page, so a child would probably sit still and listen.

I would recommend this book to the smallest reader, and to anyone who reads to them.

THE JESUS STORYBOOK BIBLE

“The Jesus Storybook Bible” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

This “storybook Bible” was written by Sally Lloyd-Jones and illustrated by JAGO.
The first thing that caught my eye with this book are the words on the cover, EACH STORY WHISPERS HIS NAME.  I just LOVE that!!
There are twenty-one stories from the Old Testament and twenty-three stories from the New Testament.  I like that there are more than the tried and true, “David and Goliath”, “Noah’s Ark”, “Adam and Eve”, “Baby Jesus”, etc.  Children need to hear about the many other stories that Jesus tells, too.  And, I love how this book includes many of them.

I just have to show you a copy of quotes from this book that just touched and held my heart! “The Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what He has done.” Don’t we all need to remember this!?!  The other section is this… “The Bible isn’t a book of rules, or a book of heroes.  The Bible is most of all a story.  It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure.  It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne – everything – to rescue the one he loves.  It’s like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life!”  Now, doesn’t that make you want to read this wonderful book!?!  Maybe it’s because I’m a poet, but these words just totally drew me in to this book.  I think they would an understanding young person, too!  I can’t wait to read this book to each of my grandchildren!

I HIGHLY recommend “The Jesus Storybook Bible”!! Let EVERY STORY WHISPER HIS NAME!!

NIV THE PLANS I HAVE FOR YOU HOLY BIBLE

“NIV The Plans I Have For You Holy Bible” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

Some of the features available in this Bible are GOD’S BIG PLANS – I like these because they explain how God used people like Moses and Gideon and 48 others.  This shows that, if God could use them, God can use YOU.  There are 25 PROMISE PRAYERS throughout.  And, my favorite thing is the 100 HIGHLIGHTED VERSES found throughout the Bible, that bring focus to God’s promises and His words.  Of course, in the back of the Bible, we find the indexes and tables.

I would recommend this Bible, but maybe to an older middle schooler, who has already gotten interested in reading the Bible.  There are no maps or special features throughout that would hold the attention of a younger reader.  The thing that disappointed me most, was that there are no explanation pages at the beginning of the books.  I really believe these are very helpful

THE INVESTIGATOR'S HOLY BIBLE

“The Investigator’s Holy Bible” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

This is a New International Bible…Every one that you purchase translates and sends copies around the world to those who have no Bibles.  I LOVE that!!
I’ve been looking for just the right Bible for my nine year old grandson, and I do believe that this is the one! I has an explanation page, called THE EVIDENCE, at the beginning of each book telling WHO WROTE IT?, HOW LONG AGO?, WHAT’S IT ABOUT?, and THE BEST PART.  Then all throughout the book, there are BREAKTHROUGH questions and answers about what was just read.  There’s THE WITNESSES, that tells about some of the characters in the story.  And, THE SCENE, telling of where the stories take place.  Then, we have CHECK THE FACTS, which are little quizzes about what was learned.  Lastly, there is CASE CLOSED, which explores how certain events read about actually relate to the child.  Of course, in the back of the Bible, there are the maps, indexes, and tables.

I love this Bible, and would definitely recommend it for children who are reading pretty well, and starting to become inquisitive! I’m excited to give it to my grandson!

ANGELS IN THE BIBLE FOR LITTLE ONES

“Angels in the Bible for Little Ones” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

“Angels in the Bible for Little Ones is a children’s fiction picture book. It is written by Allia Zobel Nolan and illustrated by Alida Masssari.
In this book, we get to see several instances where angels visited men and women on earth.  There’s Abraham – when the angels brought news that he would have a son.  Elijah – when the angels cared for him at the cave.  Mary – the news of Christ’s birth.  And, there are several more.  Each of the stories are just a few sentences with lots of pictures.  And, each story has the Scripture where the story can be found (I like that.)

“Angels in the Bible for Little Ones” is a board book with beautiful pictures, so I’d recommend it for tiny ones to sit and look at.  The stories are short, so I’d recommend it to the littlest readers.  And, as always, I’d recommend it to those who read to children.

BAA! OINK! MOO!

“Baa! Oink! Moo!” was sent to me by Zonderkidz – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.

“Baa! Oink! Moo!” is a Children’s Fiction picture book, written by Rhonda Gowler Greene.  The precious pictures were done by David Walker.  This is a board book, which I always recommend for tiny tots, because we don’t have to worry so much about them tearing it up.  And, I especially love that we can let them fall in love with books early! Reading and loving to read is so important!

“Baa! Oink! Moo!” is a mommy taking her little one through a barnyard.  The little one points out different animals and says, “Mommy look!” I love the way he or she (the illustrator includes both) always says, “Only God could make…”
Of course, you know I like the sing songy writing because I believe a tiny child likes to listen to them.

I will definitely recommend “Baa! Oink! Moo!” to the tiniest reader/listener and to all those who read to them.

DARK SONS

“Dark Sons” was sent to me by Blink – a division of Zondervan Publishing – free of charge, in exchange for my honest review.
“Dark Sons” is a Christian fiction novel, written by Nikki Grimes.  I love the way the book is written almost like a poetry anthology.  She writes from the point of view of someone from the Bible and her character.  This is the second book I have read of hers.
In “Dark Sons” the characters are Ishmael and Sam.  They are both dealing with the break-up of their parents and their families.  Both of their daddies abandoned them.  This book deals a lot with forgiveness.  Ishmael had to forgive Sarah, Abraham, and his mom, Hagar, at times.  Sam has to forgive his daddy, his step-mom, and even his mom, at times.
Just remember that this is written from Nikki imagining how it COULD BE, not exactly what the Bible says, so things may not be exactly how you remember them…Case in point, her Ishmael is a seventeen year old.

I do, however, recommend the book to middle schoolers and up.  With all of the divorce and abandonment facing these modern days, I believe this book could help in healing and forgiveness.
